Work Package 1- Development of the City’s GIS Platform on Energy Use and Needs

The project’s online maps are communication and dissemination tools but also decision support tools city planners, consisting of 4 interactive city maps. The user has the opportunity to explore the municipalities of Cesena, Evora, Trikala and Nottingham and access information for the geographical layers presented in each map. Click on the logo of each Municipality above to access the online maps.

One of the important innovations of INSMART is the use of an online GIS platform, which will present the data collected (in an aggregate form) and the results obtained through the analysis in the project. The data relate to

  • Energy demand in the building stock in each city
  • Energy demand in transportation and mobility
  • Energy systems and networks

Surveys provided information on the typology of buildings and their distribution in the city sectors as well as mobility demands. Model simulations provided information about the demand of energy in buildings and the demand of energy in transport. All these are publicly available on the GIS platform available through this webpage.

The geographical database will be updated over the project duration with input and output information from all the work packages and the online maps will be updated with each new phase of data.

After the end of the project the data will be available through the Open Data Initiative in each city, since the GIS layers will be integrated into the GIS platforms of the individual cities.

Description of Work and Tasks

This work package will set the basis of the methodological approach for a strategic urban planning as it will create the GIS platform that will be used to supply the rest of the models and to visualize and analyse the results.

This work package consists of:

  • Analysing existing sustainable policies
  • Determining the availability of energy data from each city
  • Identifying any information gaps
  • Carrying out an energy surveys of residential properties to populate the GIS platform for each city
