Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (Faculty of Science and Technology; FCT), a unit of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) and is one of the most prestigious Portuguese public schools of science and engineering today, with a total enrolment of circa 7,500 students, of which nearly 1400 are postgraduate students (MSc and PhD).
Since its foundation, FCT/UNL has given priority to the promotion of research in its areas of activity. Today FCT/UNL hosts 16 research centres acknowledged by The Portuguese Ministry of Science (of which 3 are rated “excellent” and 6 ”very good”), as well as 2 research centres (both rated “very good”).
FCT’s participation in InSmart project is targeted at developing research in energy-environment modelling. The FCT’s group is devoted to the assessment of energy and environment policies and instruments, namely synergies and cost-effectiveness potential for medium to long term scenarios, strongly supported by the IEA-TIMES_PT, a peer-reviewed optimization model for the Portuguese energy system. The group has been invited regularly by the Portuguese government to perform studies on Kyoto compliance, low carbon futures and renewables competitiveness. The group conducts research on hybrid (linking TIMES with CGE models) approaches to assess impacts of long term low carbon scenarios, on integrated assessment of environmental and energy policy instruments and on renewable roadmaps. International collaboration is fostered with research institutions within the EU FP6 Integrated Project NEEDS, the IEE Project RES2020, and the FP7 COMET project.
